Katherine E. Kolnhofer is an experienced Civil Litigator and Partner at Bell Temple LLP. She has represented her clients in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Ontario Divisional Court, and in appeals to the Court of Appeal. She also has appeared before the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, License Appeal Tribunal, as well as private arbitration proceedings.
Privacy and Cybersecurity
Katherine leads the firm’s Privacy, Cybersecurity and Technology Law Group, and is Harvard educated in Cybersecurity Risk Management. She focuses on identifying and managing operational, litigation and reputational risk, and data breach management. She is working with SMEs on education and preparedness for the Canadian Mandatory Breach Notification Regulations coming into force November 1, 2018, and on the recent implications of the GDPR.
As part of her technology focus, Katherine is experienced in the area of Drones from a commercial and healthcare perspective, where she has worked with clients who are innovators in the area of Drones and healthcare.
Katherine partnered with EDIT (Expo for Design. Innovation. & Technology) which took place in Toronto in October 2017, where she curated and hosted a panel on the use of Drones (UAVs) in facilitating healthcare initiatives, which included Transport Canada. Katherine explored the various liability risks, privacy concerns and insurance coverage issues. The EXPO was an international event which partnered with the UNDP and was supported by high profile sponsors and world renowned innovators.
Katherine also practices in the areas of insurance defence, including commercial/general liability claims (CGL), complex bodily injury and casualty claims, coverage opinions, professional liability and negligence, and multi-party litigation. She defends claims involving substantial losses and has a particular interest in complex liability issues involving technology, engineering, and product liability matters.
Katherine has an excellent reputation as a litigator, and has a results driven approach. She has conducted a significant number of mediations, with optimum results for her clients, however, is prepared to go to trial when necessary.
Katherine is passionate about advancing Women in Law and Technology. She presented at the Design Exchange @dx.org with top female entrepreneurs on March 8, 2018, International Women’s Day. The Design Exchange is a renowned Canadian organization which focuses on innovation, design and technology. She presented on technology and law related issues, including Drones.
